O poema de Beowulf é considerada o primeiro texto da literatura anglo-saxão,boa parte da obra realmente retrata com precisão o comportamento e o pensamento dos escandinavos da Idade Média pré-cristã e pré -viking. Beowulf, narra as aventuras de um valoroso guerreiro que viaja à região onde hoje fica a Dinamarca, com um pequeno grupo de aliados para enfrentar uma monstruosa criatura chamada Grendel. Embora tenha sido escrito com conotação cristã(nota-se isso pela referencia aos deuses do cristianismo na obra) é possível identificar no texto as motivações heróicas dos seus persanagens, típicas dos guerreiros da época que entravam em guerras em busca de aventuras.
