Problemas atuais enfrentados pela floresta amazônica:

Um dos principais problemas é o desmatamento ilegal e predatório. Madeireiras instalam-se na região para cortar e vender troncos de árvores nobres. Há também fazendeiros que provocam queimadas na floresta para ampliação de áreas de cultivo (principalmente de soja). Estes dois problemas preocupam cientistas e ambientalistas do mundo, pois em pouco tempo, podem provocar um desequilíbrio no ecossistema da região, colocando em risco a floresta.


Outro problema é a biopirataria na floresta amazônica. Cientistas estrangeiros entram na floresta, sem autorização de autoridades brasileiras, para obter amostras de plantas ou espécies animais. Levam estas para seus países, pesquisam e desenvolvem substâncias, registrando patente e depois lucrando com isso. O grande problema é que o Brasil teria que pagar, futuramente, para utilizar substâncias cujas matérias-primas são originárias do nosso território.


Com a descoberta de ouro na região (principalmente no estado do Pará), muitos rios estão sendo contaminados. Os garimpeiros usam o mercúrio no garimpo, substância que está contaminando os rios e peixes da região. Índios que habitam a floresta amazônica também sofrem com a extração de ouro na região, pois a água dos rios e os peixes são importantes para a sobrevivência das tribos.
